Travel Tips For Photography Newbies, How to Use Your Camera While Cruising on Seine River in Paris

While on board a boat in Seine, there were a couple of things I could have done with my trusty hybrid camera, Canon G9, but I was not able to take many precious photos. I was so disorganized in my thoughts and I was overthinking the composition of my photos so much. I’m not being hard on myself, though. I was in Paris, for crying out loud. I have all the right in the world to lose my mind a little bit, and be  overwhelmed by the breathtaking sights – stunning details in the design of the bridges, lovely people around me, and the by Eiffel Tower smiling at me. My favorite scenes in the films Before Sunset and Before Sunrise were playing in my head over and over. It was so surreal.

But there were lessons learned on that fateful night, when I befriended the Seine River for the first time. If you are planning to go to Paris, or visualizing your trip there, I’m pleased to give you a few photography pointers while on board the Bateaux Mouches or whatever boat operator you choose for your river cruise. (There are so many choices. We went for Bateaux Mouches because it was the first flier my bosses and I saw in the hotel where we attended a business conference.)

Look ahead, but give enough time for taking each scene in the moment. Look ahead so you would know if you’re approaching a landmark. If you’re still far from the Statue of Liberty, relax with the camera. Take the scene in. Keep your camera in your hand, secure and safe from getting wet by the occasional little splashes of water from the river. Live in the moment, breathe Paris in, and take a couple of photos in decent intervals. Believe me, it’s okay to relax and stop taking photos. I did, and in contrast to looking at the sights through my 3” LCD, the 360-degrees view is more appealing. It depends on where you’re seated, but you can stand up without obstructing anyone’s view and get a good look around you. I was able to take a good amount of time to breathe in the scene, but I also wasted a couple of moments trying to capture a good image of Notre Dame from the river when the boat kind of picked up a little speed and I lost the opportunity to just take the scene in.

Walk around the boat and smile. Let the cool Parisian breeze kiss your cheeks. Smile at the tourists. If you see a lovely child and you get a rush of desire to capture a beautiful innocent smile, ask for the guardian’s permission before taking photos. Tourists are usually friendly. Remember you are sharing a common experience with them and they would be happy to meet friendly tourists, too. If you see a group of people taking their photos and one of them will obviously not make it in the frame, offer to take the photo. I did, and the people were very thankful. It’s part of the fun in the experience.

Take candid shots of people. If you are quick with the shutter release and you have a matching quick camera to capture a fleeting moment of serene introspection on an interesting background or foreground, go for it, take a snap shot of a complete stranger’s portrait! Candid photographers get a mix of different reactions, so just hope for the best, and make sure that you do not take photos when the subject is not going to look so good, i.e. when they are yawning. Bring home a postcard candid portrait as a souvenir. You can also take an extra step and introduce yourself to your photo subject, give your business card or get their e-mail address so you can give them a copy. We did that, it felt so good!

Pre-set your camera to a high ISO. Since the boat is moving, it is likely you will catch some blurry photos. One of the basic things I learned in photography is that a high ISO prevents a blurry image, but it can render a bad texture to your image. Get to know your camera so you would know how to quickly change ISOs to get a better image. My camera was relatively new at the time so tinkering to switch ISOs was not good.

Avoid using your flash. Try capturing images without the flash. If you get the right trick, correct lens opening, correct exposure to light, good focus, you will get a more poetic image than the usual auto. However, for group photos if you will be cruising at night, then the flash, of course, is necessary. Fortunately in Paris, it does not get dark until past 10 in the evening. So you have a lot of time for photography in natural light.

Smile and show how it’s done. If you want a certain composition, and your friends are away, ask for a fellow tourist’s help. (I wandered off and left my bosses.) First, preset your camera. Then take a photo of them. Then show them how you composed the image. For example, “It would be nice if the Eiffel Tower is somewhere here, and I’m not in the middle of the photo.” I did this, and it worked on the second attempt of my very nice fellow tourist! You have to do this quickly because the boat is moving, and so is your background.

When not taking photos, take videos. (Or do both.) I cannot believe that I did not take videos. I was just clicking away and ignoring those who were capturing videos of the scenes. When shooting still images, you have to be focused on your LCD for a nice composition. When taking videos, just aim the camera in one direction, look around, you’ll still get fine moving images.
