How to Keep Your Home Safe When You are Away

We all want to make sure that our homes are protected and safe while we are away for the day or for any extended period of time.  There is no way to know for sure if something is going to happen while we are gone.  The only thing that we can do is prepared for out homes to stay safe while we are not there.  There are a few things that we can do in order to provide safety for our homes. One way is to tell our neighbors that we trust about not being home.It is very important that we only tell the neighbors that we have trust in and that we know about being gone.  We have to be confident enough that they will look out for our home and take care of it while we are away.  Tell them to check on the pets and plants while you are gone as well.  This will make it look like someone is their taking care of things.  They can also gather the mail and the newspaper everyday as well.  This will keep potential prey thinking someone is home.

You can also tell the local police department if you are going away for an extended period of time.  Tell them the dates that you will be gone and ask them to patrol the home every once in a while. This is good especially if you live in a secured area. You always want to make sure that the doors and the windows are always locked when you leave to go anywhere.  Do not make it easy for an intruder to get inside your home.Keep things secure and well protected with good quality locks that will be tough for anyone to pass by~Keep things secure and well protected with good quality locks that will be tough for anyone to pass by}. You will also want to make sure that everything is secure inside the home too.If you are just leaving for the day, make sure that lights are off and anything electrical if turned off as well.  If you are leaving for a few days, you may want to turn the water main off in the home as well as the hot water heater too.  This will protect your home from an unexpected breaks or leaks that can occur at any given time.  You do not want to come home to the surprise of having a flood in your home.

Home Security, Don’t Leave Home Without It

Is the choice either to be burgled or turn your house into a high tech security fortress?  Not at all.  The first step is to know the ways burglars break into your home and what to look out for to reduce your chance of being burgled.  Inexpensive precautions like installing better locks will make your dwelling more secure while at the same time a less desirable choice for the criminal.Install outdoor motion sensor lights.  This is an inexpensive way to reduce the risk of someone coming onto your premises at night.  Surveillance cameras have become quite affordable.  Some models are wireless.Simply mount the small camera to monitor a particular area and the image can be viewed on your TV set.  Make sure you do not make it obvious that you are away.  Have a neighbor pick up your mail.

What about installing a home security or surveillance system?  Undoubtedly the largest benefit you receive when an alarm is installed in your home is the peace of mind in knowing that the percentage of homes that are broken into with an alarm is 97% less than homes that do not have an alarm.  The homeowner should have a basic knowledge of the types of systems available to make the most cost effective choice.  Perimeter sensors protect each door and window and detect an initial entry attempt.  Motion sensors detect an intruder moving inside the house.  Systems are either hardwired or wireless, using radio signals.  Once an intrusion is detected the alarm system can sound a local alarm or contact an alarm monitoring company.  The security representative surveying your home and living patterns can make recommendations for your best protection.

The following are some crime facts in neighborhoods today.

– Burglary and thefts from auto’s are the most prevalent neighborhood crimes.
– Household burglary is one of the easiest crimes to commit, and to prevent.
- Most home burglars are young amateurs looking for easy targets.
- In over one-half of household burglaries, there was no forced entry involved.
– Most home intrusions occur during daylight hours while homeowners are away.

A Dog Can Be Your Best Friend When It Comes to Home Security

Burglar alarms are not the be-all and end-all of home security. There are plenty of other things you can install in your home that will help to stop a burglar from gaining entry ?and many of them are very simple and inexpensive.

The key is to secure the possible points of entry. This means that doors should be made of strong, solid material (definitely not plastic or glass), be properly secured to their hinges and have tamper-resistant locks. Ideally, you should have an extra deadbolt that you put on at night, made from very strong metal.

Windows should be made from toughened glass, preferably double-glazed, so that they are almost impossible to break. Although window locks are relatively uncommon, they help greatly with security, and you should consider installing them. If your house has windows in a position where they can be easily and discreetly accessed from the street, such as basement windows, you should consider putting metal bars on them.

It is also important for your garden to be secure, as far more burglars enter through the back of your house than the front. This means that your fences should be high and have some kind of anti-climbing measures (spikes or anti-climb paint can work well). If you don't like fences, get big hedges instead.

Another thing to consider is getting a dog ?surprisingly effective against burglars, who don't generally want to mess with dogs if they can avoid it. For this strategy to be more effective, put up a aware of the dog?sign. Smaller dogs are not so great for this because they are not generally scary ?something like a big German Shepherd works best, not only because of their size, but because of their strong guard instincts that cause them to be hostile to strangers.
