Normally made from steel right around 1/2 inch thick and hardened, safes are built tough. Some safes have the feature of 2 sheets of steel with ball bearings in the middle.The ball bearings make drilling through the door or sides very difficult.

The door and lock are intrinsically the weakest points of any safe. Upon activating the lock, at the minimum 4 hardened steel or preferably titanium bolts should work to keep the safe secure The hinges are not something to worry about as they are designed to be on the inside.

You can find safes with either combination, key , or fingerprint activated locks. The best safes have combinations of different types of lock and time delays before a lock will open.

Key locks have the definite downside of people being able to pick the quite easily wit hthe right tools and knowhow. The rotary combination type locks are not the best either, as an expert can quickly find the combination on one. If you must have a combination style lock for your safe then a keypad lock is the safest option. Just remeber to keep the batteries in the thing. A thief cannot listen to a digital keypad for the sound of the tumblers to move as there are none.

Keeping the keypad clean is very important. Keys that are not kept spotless can leave clues as to the numbers that were pushed to open it. Make sure that your combination is not guessable by making it the same as your phone number or birthday. Make sure it is unique.

The biometric gun safe is probably the best bet for unbreakable security. Then you can have absolute confidence that while your fingers are attached to your body that nobody will be able to open your safe without your knowledge.

A combination of the keypad and the fingerprint lock offers the best security for your valuables, unless you can get a fingerprint lock with multiple person memory.

By using many layers of insulating material and expanding door seals, many of the safes on the market incorporate a bit a fire safety by not allowing any oxygen into the safe which would allow combustion of its contents.
