Crime is always on the rise and home security has never been more important. Your home is at risk all the time but there is a rise in crime during hotter days as people become more and more careless with their home security. It is unbelievable that people still leave a spare key under the doormat or above the doorframe or even under a plant next to the front door. Thieves do check these obvious places for keys and if one actually saw get a key this way you can guarantee they will be round for a visit the next time you leave you home.

It’s a hot day and like millions of people you open a few windows but make sure you close them before you go out. Even if you think you will only be five minutes think about how much a thief could steel in that time. The last thing you want to do is return and find someone in you home.

Make sure you don’t leave valuable garden furniture and equipment in plain sight for people to easily see. Try and be discreet and place it behind a wall or plants so it is not easily seen. You should always remove any gardening tools as they can be used to break in to your home.

For simplicity and as a cheap solution a door entry system offers a quick way to protect your home. There are two types of door alarm, one is attached to the door with a small sensor at each side. Every time the door is opened the alarm goes off so you know someone has come in. The other option is a small battery operated motion sensor alarm, which can be placed above or aimed at the door.

This motion sensor can be places in a hallway, at patio doors or even slightly away from the door so that the children can come and go into the kitchen for drinks but if anyone went into another part of the house the alarm would go off.

The motion sensor mini alarm offers the easiest and quickest set up to improve the security in your home or business. Usually the sensors come with two settings so you can have a short chime to let you know someone has entered or continuous alarm so you know someone is somewhere they shouldn’t be.

Another great way to use these mini sensors is on vacation so you know someone is not in your room whilst you are asleep. The last thing you want is to wake up with an intruder standing over you.

Most crime is committed by opportunist thief who will take any chance you give them to steal from you. If you do not give them the opportunity to make you a victim they will move on to someone who will. Remember it is better to prevent a crime, so call your local police station for crime prevention advice.

An infrared security camera (also called a night vision security camera) uses infrared illuminators to light the area with infrared light that humans cannot see, but that the camera can. This lets the camera see and record for you a visible image of what’s going on even in total darkness.

How an infrared security camera works

Cameras are rated by for light sensitivity according to their lux rating. The lower the lux the better the camera can see in low light.

For example, a camera with 0.005 lux is better than one with 0.1 lux. An infrared camera, though, is considered to be 0.0 lux when in infrared mode. It can see clearly in total darkness.

An infrared security camera achieves this by using infrared LED illuminators around the lens, to light the area with infrared radiation. This night vision security camera then picks up the images illuminated by the infrared light.

Don’t confuse cameras that call themselves Day/Night cameras with infrared cameras. Day/Night cameras usually are suitable for use in low-light situations. They are not capable, however, of capturing images in total darkness. Only infrared or night vision security cameras can accomplish that.

What else you need to know

Infrared security cameras differ from each other in how far they can see in total darkness. This is generally based on how many infrared LEDs the camera contains. The more LEDs, the farther the camera can see.
A long-range night vision security camera is capable of seeing as far as 50 to 60 meters with no light at all.

Your infrared security camera will record only in black and white when in infrared mode, but you can get a camera that also records color during the day. Sensors on the camera automatically switch from color recording to black and white according to the light level.

You’ll find night vision security cameras are usually lightweight and easy both to set up and to use.

Avoid using an infrared camera that is contained in a glass-front outdoor housing. This is because the infrared light too easily reflects off the glass of the housing and creates a glare that obscures the image. Your best bet for an outdoor infrared security camera is a weatherproof bullet-style camera.

Keep in mind, also, that infrared cameras require more power (specifically, more amperage) than a regular camera. Make sure, therefore, that you check the power requirements in the specifications for a camera before you buy it.

Ultimately, when you want to be sure that your surveillance system will capture what’s going on no matter how low the light level, there’s no substitute for infrared security cameras. Their ability to see in absolute darkness cannot be matched by anything else.
